Dating outside your culture
Let’s not play innocent, we all have used dating apps in our lives. It’s the new way to get to know people nowadays in this crazy, fast paced world. Doesn’t matter your gender and your preference, there’s opportunity to get to know more people and make new friends… or even meet the love of your life!
The UK is a rich multicultural country, it’s exciting to see many international professionals and students from all over the world. I first came on a tourist Visa on 2018 and met my now husband. And boy, did we have many cultural shocks back then!
First of all, my English was good, but not my accent. LOTS OF PRACTICE EVERYDAY REALLY MADE THE DIFFERENCE and now everyone can understand me clearly. Mexican men have to behave a certain way British men don’t (no hate). My husband had to learn a whole new behaviour code like formally presenting himself to my parents or asking them for permission to marry me, but not let this fool you into thinking we’re uptight.
Latin culture welcomes outsiders in our families. Once you become part of the family you have cute nicknames, your mother-in law makes you your favourite food in big quantities and you open your taste buds and mind to a whole new world of amazing flavours and wholesomeness.
Now, depending on the country your partner is from, is the spanish you should learn. Choosing between European or Latin American can make a huge difference when you sign up for spanish lessons. I’m not saying it’s completely different but my husband just learnt the meaning of coger in Europe and Mexico:
🇪🇸COGER (verb): To take. Ella coge el autobús al trabajo / She takes the bus to work.
🇲🇽COGER (verb): A vulgar connotation interpreted as a slang term for a sexual act. Never use this word in Mexico!
If you're ever uncertain about the usage of a word in a particular region, it's always best to ask the locals or consult a reliable local source to understand the word's appropriate context.
Anyway, dating outside your culture can offer a wide range of benefits, enriching your personal life and broadening your horizons. It can be an excellent opportunity to improve your spanish skills and communication abilities. Dating someone from a different culture requires openness and adaptability. It can push you to grow as a person and become more flexible in your thinking and behavior. And the best thing, it can lead to personal growth and self-discovery as you navigate and question your own cultural beliefs and values.
Cultural differences can also present challenges, so effective communication and a willingness to learn from each other are crucial for a successful cross-cultural relationship.
